Egaleo industrial waste scandal pollutes Kifisos River

Greek authorities have uncovered an illegal industrial waste disposal operation in Egaleo that contaminated the Kifisos River and the Athens coastline. Following a multi-day investigation, police arrested a 41-year-old tanker driver and a 63-year-old gas station manager during a sting operation. Investigators discovered that a special pipe had been installed to connect the tanker directly to the station's storm drain system, allowing for the discharge of highly acidic liquid industrial waste.

Laboratory analysis confirmed the waste had a high acidity level of pH 4.8 and a heavy organic load. At least four illegal discharges were identified over a 20-day period. The waste reportedly originated from various industrial units, including a biscuit factory and a public hospital. The pollution posed an immediate risk to public health and surface waters.

E. I. Papadopoulos S.A., a biscuit manufacturer mentioned in connection with the waste source, issued a statement clarifying that the tanker involved does not belong to its own fleet but to a third-party contractor responsible for waste transport. The company stated it is cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident fully.
