Toxic waste legacy in Wales exposed by Michael Sheen documentary
A BBC documentary, ‘Buried with Michael Sheen’, has highlighted a legacy of toxic waste dumping in Wales, specifically involving polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) at a former Monsanto factory in Newport. Former worker Stephen Constance reported that staff used inadequate protective equipment and were not informed about the specific hazards of the materials they were burying in the 1990s.
Dr. David Megson, a scientist from Manchester Metropolitan University involved in the investigation, stated that the 14 sites identified in the programme represent only the ‘tip of the iceberg’. He estimated there are approximately 20,000 high-concern sites across the UK. Megson noted that data suggests these sites are leaking a ‘chemical cocktail’ and expressed concern that PCBs, which are suspected carcinogens, may be present in high levels.
Whistleblower Douglas Gowan has spent 50 years attempting to prompt investigations into widespread industrial chemical dumping. While PCBs were banned in the UK in the 1970s and are prohibited in 151 countries, concerns remain regarding their environmental impact and potential health risks to nearby residents.
