Toxoplasma gondii protein discovery reveals mechanism for chronic infection survival
Researchers have identified a parasite-specific protein, named TgPRO, that allows Toxoplasma gondii to manage metabolic stress during chronic infections. The study, conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Whitehead Institute, reveals how the parasite coordinates energy production and iron use to survive within crowded tissue cysts in the brain or muscles.
By controlling genes involved in oxidative stress management, TgPRO helps the parasite survive the buildup of reactive oxygen molecules. This discovery marks the first identification of a dedicated regulator of metabolic gene expression in apicomplexans, a group of parasites that includes the organisms responsible for malaria. Scientists suggest that inhibiting the pathways controlled by TgPRO could potentially make the parasite more susceptible to existing antiparasitic drugs.
