Toy Story 5 debut reveals Woody’s full name and fuels talk of a sequel

The June 19 release of Toy Story 5 introduces new character details, including Sheriff Woody’s full name, Woody Pride, and a suggested family link to Jessie, whose full name is Jessica Jane “Jessie” Pride. Tom Hanks expressed surprise at the revelation, while co‑star Tim Allen confirmed he had heard the lore beforehand. The film also features a poignant scene where a young girl is hurt by online messages, and introduces Lilypad, a smart tablet that challenges the toys’ creative play.

Woody’s appearance shows signs of aging, such as a bald spot meant to symbolize wear, and the story follows Bonnie, now eight, navigating new technology. Hanks later discussed the possibility of a Toy Story 6, stating any sequel must have a strong creative reason and not be driven solely by the franchise’s brand. He raised concerns about using AI to recreate his voice, calling the idea “a scary thought.”

Earlier in the franchise’s history, Pixar considered Robin Williams, Clint Eastwood and Paul Newman for Woody’s voice before Hanks was cast, illustrating how the role eventually became iconic.
