Supergirl’s box‑office flop highlights DC Studios’ strategic woes

Supergirl opened to a $38 million domestic weekend and about $30 million overseas, totaling roughly $68 million worldwide—well below its reported $170 million production budget and far short of studio expectations. The film’s performance ranked below previous DC disappointments such as The Flash and even the 2022 Marvel flop Morbius, earning a 56 % Rotten Tomatoes score and a B‑grade CinemaScore.

By contrast, Pixar’s Toy Story 5 dominated the same period, posting a $70 million domestic opening, $89.1 million overseas and a cumulative $585 million worldwide, keeping the top box‑office spot for a second week.

DC co‑CEO Peter Safran, speaking to the New York Times, emphasized that Supergirl is “just one component of a broader, long‑term strategy” and said the studio remains confident despite the setback. The poor showing adds pressure as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares for a sale to Paramount Skydance.

International markets echoed the domestic decline: in China the film earned only $311 k on its first day, projected to finish under $2 million, prompting theaters to pull it from screens. In Brazil it grossed about R$7.2 million, also well behind other releases.

The results have sparked concerns about upcoming DC projects such as Clayface and a new Wonder Woman, and underline the challenges of revitalizing the DC Universe in a crowded market.
