Toyama Airport implements privatization and rebranding strategies

Six months after its privatization, Toyama Airport is undergoing significant transformations to boost passenger numbers, which fell from a peak of 1.39 million in 2004 to approximately 380,000 last fiscal year. Under the management of Toyama Airport, the facility has been rebranded as “Toyama Takayama Sushi Airport” to promote local culinary specialties.

Key initiatives include the opening of new dining options featuring local black ramen and sushi, and the establishment of a Tokyo-based AI and data analysis firm’s office within the airport to assist with operational data. Management plans to modernize souvenir shops and relocate the passenger lounge to create a more open, stylish environment.

To improve staff engagement, the company has introduced a “President’s Treat Vending Machine” that allows two employees to purchase drinks simultaneously by tapping their cards together. Additionally, the company plans to abolish the president’s office to create a shared workspace and has adopted local sports team uniforms for staff attire.

While passenger numbers saw a slight 3.2% increase in the first half of the year due to the resumption of international flights, management remains cautious. Meanwhile, the prefecture is adjusting taxi subsidies for travel to Takayama to address local concerns regarding the use of tax revenue.
