Toyama Chihou Railway to maintain full line despite deficits
The Toyama Chihou Railway has decided to maintain its entire 53-kilometer line from Dentetsu-Toyama to Unazuki Onsen, despite facing significant financial deficits. While discussions previously considered the potential abolition of certain sections, such as the segment between Namerikawa and Shin-Uozu that runs parallel to the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, local authorities and the railway company have opted to preserve the full route to avoid operational inefficiencies and service disruptions.
Starting in fiscal year 2027, the railway will transition to a “de facto vertical separation” model (minashi jouge bunri). Under this arrangement, the local government and the railway company will share maintenance and management costs. This restructuring aims to facilitate the renewal of vehicles and infrastructure to ensure the long-term viability of the regional transport network.
