Toyama high schools targeted in series of shoe insole thefts
A series of unusual thefts has been reported across 14 high schools in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The perpetrator(s) specifically target the insoles of indoor school shoes belonging to female students.
Reports indicate that at least 36 incidents have been confirmed across seven municipalities, including Toyama, Takaoka, and Imizu. Many victims have noted that their insoles were forcibly removed, sometimes even from shoes where the insoles had been sewn in place.
A common characteristic among the victims is that they are often high-profile students, such as those who excel in club activities or have had their names published in the media. Experts suggest the motive may be a psychological desire for dominance or ownership over specific individuals identified online.
Police are currently investigating the incidents, including reviewing school security camera footage, as students express growing anxiety regarding the repetitive nature of the crimes.
