Toyama hotel banquet causes norovirus food poisoning in 56 people

In Toyama Prefecture, 56 people fell ill with food poisoning following a banquet held at a hotel on August 20. Health officials identified norovirus as the cause, specifically linking the illness to nigiri sushi containing sweet shrimp and snow crab.

As a result of the investigation, Sakae Sushi, the establishment responsible for preparing and serving the sushi, has been ordered to suspend operations for three days starting August 31. Among the 56 affected individuals, symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Norovirus was detected in nine patients and one sushi chef.
