Heavy rain sparks landslide and flood alerts in Japan's north
A low‑pressure system moved over northern Japan in late July 2026, bringing intense rainfall to several prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of up to 80 mm of rain in a 24‑hour period, with localized bursts of 50 mm per hour.
In Toyama Prefecture, the storm caused landslide‑risk warnings (Level 4) for Koyabe, Tonami, Nanto and western Toyama City, and debris blocked about 14 km of National Route 156, prompting a partial road closure. Evacuation orders were issued; six people temporarily used a shelter before the order was lifted.
Ishikawa Prefecture saw its first-ever Level 4 heavy‑rain danger warnings for Wajima, Shika and Anamizu, leading to temporary evacuation centres and disruptions to rail services, airport flights and horse‑racing events.
Niigata experienced Level 4 landslide warnings in Aga‑no City and Aga‑cho, with forecasts of continued heavy rain through August. Akita Prefecture issued a Level 3 flood warning for the Tahe River as water levels rose.
Aomori’s agricultural office released detailed technical measures for farmers to protect rice paddies, apple orchards, vegetables, livestock facilities and farm infrastructure from rain, hail and lightning, urging drainage, protective coverings and prompt reporting of damage.
