Toyama to host national girls sumo championship and Keirin races

Toyama Prefecture will host two significant sporting events in September 2026. The 7th Wanpaku Sumo Girls National Championship is scheduled for September 20 at the YKK AP Arena. The competition will feature 185 female elementary school students from across Japan who have won their respective prefectural qualifiers.

Additionally, the Kyodo News Cup, a GII Keirin race, will take place at the Toyama Velodrome from September 18 to 21. This marks the first time the event has been held in Toyama in ten years. The race features a 32 million yen prize for the winner and includes top-tier athletes such as Yusaku Koseki, Kohei Gunji, and Yuta Wakimoto.
