Toyota achieves carbon-neutral production milestone in Deeside, UK

Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK has achieved a milestone by becoming the company’s first carbon-neutral production site in Europe and its second globally, following its facilities in Japan. Located in Deeside, North Wales, the engine plant has transitioned to renewable energy sources and eliminated fossil fuel reliance.

A key component of this transition is a new waste treatment plant situated adjacent to the factory. Funded by a €329 million private investment, the facility can process approximately 180,000 tonnes of waste annually from the Deeside area. Through bacterial processes, the plant generates biomethane, which is piped directly to the factory to replace natural gas, preventing nearly 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The Deeside site is a critical hub for Toyota, producing 1.8-litre hybrid and petrol engines for models such as the Corolla and C-HR. While production is now carbon-neutral, full official accreditation is expected in 2027 following a 12-month supervised production cycle. This achievement aligns with Toyota Motor Europe’s broader strategic goal to have all European manufacturing plants reach carbon-neutral production by 2030.
