Toyota achieves carbon neutrality at Deeside plant in North Wales

Toyota's engine manufacturing plant in Deeside, North Wales, has become the company's first production facility outside of Japan to achieve carbon neutrality. This milestone is supported by a £282 million private investment in a nearby anaerobic digester facility.

The digester processes approximately 180,000 tonnes of waste annually, converting it into electricity and biomethane. This biomethane is transported via underground pipelines to the Deeside plant to replace natural gas, a move expected to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 3,000 tonnes per year. The facility also utilizes renewable electricity and has eliminated waste sent to landfills.

As part of a 'multi-pathway' strategy, Toyota is also implementing circular economy practices. For instance, aluminum recovered from end-of-life vehicles at the Burnaston Circular Factory in Derbyshire is repurposed to manufacture new engine blocks at the Deeside site. The company intends to transition all its European production plants to carbon-neutral operations by 2030.
