Toyota advances hybrid and hydrogen vehicle development

Toyota is advancing its alternative powertrain portfolio with updates to its plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicle lineups. The 2027 Toyota Prius Prime PHEV, a fifth-generation plug-in hybrid, will receive equipment updates including dual-zone automatic climate control and a new exterior color. The model is designed for drivers with access to charging stations who can utilize its electric range for daily commutes.

Additionally, Toyota is developing a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) version of the Hilux pickup, targeted for a 2028 launch in Europe and Oceania. Development targets for the Hilux FCEV include a driving range exceeding 400 kilometres and a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kilograms. To test this technology under extreme conditions, Toyota GAZOO Racing plans to enter a fuel-cell Hilux in the 2027 Dakar Rally Future Mission 1000 category. The company is also exploring hydrogen applications for heavy-duty trucks through partnerships with Scania and IVECO.
