Toyota and Chinese brands boost Brazil's car sales in first half of 2026

Brazil's light-vehicle market registered 259,760 new registrations in June, a 28.4% increase over the same month in 2025, keeping a strong growth pace for the first half of 2026. Chinese manufacturers expanded their presence, reaching a record 16.5% share with 51,300 units sold, led by BYD in hybrid and electric segments and supported by GWM and other newcomers.

The 50‑model ranking was headed by Fiat Strada, Volkswagen Polo and VW T‑Cross, while new entrants such as Volkswagen's Tera SUV quickly entered the top ranks. Toyota introduced the bZ4X electric SUV, offering up to 343 hp and a dedicated platform, and launched the RAV4 plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) delivering 324 hp, about 80 km of pure electric range and DC fast‑charging from 10 % to 80 % in roughly 30 minutes, aimed at Brazilian urban drivers.

Analysts note that the competition between traditional brands like Volkswagen and Fiat and the rising Chinese players is intensifying, with the market expected to stay robust in the second half of the year as more electrified models arrive.
