Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing dominate NASCAR Cup Series Chase
Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) have established a dominant position in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase, with five Toyota drivers occupying the top six in the standings. Christopher Bell’s victory at the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway moved him into second place in the standings, while Denny Hamlin remains the points leader.
Despite this technical dominance, concerns have been raised regarding internal competition. Kevin Harvick noted that JGR’s strength—having multiple drivers like Hamlin, Bell, Briscoe, and Ty Gibbs fighting for the title—could lead to self-inflicted setbacks if teammates engage in aggressive racing against one another. Joe Gibbs has previously expressed apprehension regarding teammate contact during high-stakes races.
Toyota led 256 of the 367 laps at Darlington, showcasing a strong manufacturer package. While Hamlin remains the benchmark, his recent performance included a collision with Michael McDowell that resulted in an 18th-place finish, highlighting the volatility of the championship race.
