Toyota and Mercedes-Benz subsidiary unveil diverse automotive technology strategies

Toyota Motor Europe has presented a multi-pathway strategy for the future of mobility, emphasizing that reducing CO2 emissions does not require a single technological solution. During a meeting in Brussels, the company detailed its focus on three core areas: next-generation hybrids, renewable fuels, and hydrogen fuel cells. A key component of this plan involves redesigning internal combustion engines to be smaller and more efficient, potentially integrating them into electric vehicle platforms.

Toyota’s approach aims to address the diverse needs of the European market, where charging infrastructure, energy costs, and consumer financial capabilities vary significantly. This flexibility allows the manufacturer to adapt to shifting regulations and demand while mitigating the risks of massive, singular investments.

Separately, YASA, a British company under the Mercedes-Benz Group, is developing a new generation of axial flux electric motors. These motors are designed to reduce or entirely eliminate the need for rare earth metals, such as dysprosium and terbium, which are currently critical to the supply chain. A prototype of this technology demonstrated a peak power of 750 kW with a weight of only 12.7 kg, representing a significant advancement in power density for electric propulsion.
