Toyota and PFN discuss physical AI and humanoid robotics

At the Intel Robotics Workshop 2026 in Tokyo, experts from Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Preferred Networks (PFN), and Toyota Motor Corporation discussed the evolving landscape of physical AI and humanoid robotics.

Representatives from Mitsubishi UFJ Bank highlighted that the market's success depends on addressing social issues like labor shortages and targeting high-value markets. They noted that while the US and China are projected to see humanoid markets exceeding $1 trillion each by 2050, Japan must leverage its hardware strengths to overcome challenges in software and data integration. The Japanese government aims to capture over 30% of the global AI robotics market by 2040.

Preferred Networks (PFN) addressed the current ambiguity in the definition of physical AI, noting that while the term is often used broadly to describe AI handling physical phenomena, the industry is still refining its scope. The discussions emphasized that physical AI is expected to move beyond rule-based automation to handle complex, long-tail tasks in environments like factories and logistics centers.
