Toyota and Scania partner to develop hydrogen fuel cell trucks

Toyota Motor Corporation and Scania have announced an alliance to develop hydrogen fuel cell systems for heavy-duty freight transport and logistics. As part of Scania’s Pilot Partner program, Toyota will supply fuel cell systems for 40 trucks to evaluate technical performance, operational efficiency, and maintenance costs under real-world conditions. These trucks will utilize Toyota’s third-generation fuel cell technology, which provides 300 kW of power in a compact design. Scania expects the first hydrogen-powered electric trucks to enter operation in the first quarter of 2027.

In a broader industry move, several major companies including Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, Bosch, Air Liquide, and TotalEnergies are collaborating to accelerate the commercialization of hydrogen mobility. This initiative aims to build a complete ecosystem—encompassing vehicles, refueling infrastructure, and supply chains—to scale hydrogen transport for heavy-duty use by 2030. The group intends to deploy refueling stations along strategic European corridors to ensure competitive total cost of ownership for customers. Full details of these industry efforts are expected to be released during the IAA Transportation fair in Hannover in September 2026.
