Toyota partners with Scania and IVECO on hydrogen heavy-duty trucks

Toyota has entered into strategic partnerships with Scania and IVECO to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty transport in Europe.

Through the EU-funded EMPOWER project, Toyota is collaborating with IVECO to develop the S-eWay Fuel Cell. This next-generation truck aims to provide a range exceeding 900 km and a system durability of over 25,000 operating hours. The vehicle will utilize Toyota’s 300 kW fuel cell system, featuring a lighter architecture that requires only half the battery capacity of previous generations. Technical validation is expected to begin in late 2026, with real-world road trials scheduled for the first half of 2027.

Separately, Toyota is partnering with Scania to test its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell systems in 40 heavy-duty vehicles. This initiative, part of Scania’s Pilot Partner program, will deploy the trucks in real-world logistics operations to evaluate technical performance, operational efficiency, and total cost of ownership. These Scania hydrogen-powered trucks are expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027.
