Toyota to launch hydrogen Hilux by 2028 and test in Dakar Rally
Toyota has confirmed plans to launch a commercial hydrogen fuel cell version (FCEV) of the Hilux pickup truck by 2028. The new model aims to provide a range of over 400 km and a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg, offering a faster refueling alternative to battery electric vehicles with a target refill time of approximately five minutes.
As part of its technology development, Toyota Gazoo Racing will enter the DKR GR FC Hilux into the Dakar Rally 2027 in the Future Mission 1000 category. This experimental vehicle will use hydrogen fuel cells to test the technology under extreme desert conditions, including heat, vibrations, and sand, over a 1,000 km course.
The hydrogen variant will join a diverse powertrain lineup for the ninth-generation Hilux, which includes diesel, mild-hybrid, and fully electric options.
