Toyota Australia tests HiLux with 100 per cent vegetable oil fuel

Toyota Australia has successfully tested HVO100, a 100 per cent low-carbon liquid fuel (LCLF), as a direct replacement for conventional diesel in its HiLux models. Conducted in partnership with fuel supplier Ampol, the trials confirmed that HiLux vehicles equipped with 1GD and 2GD diesel engines dating back to 2015 can run on this hydrotreated vegetable oil without requiring any vehicle modifications.

HVO100 is produced from renewable sources, including vegetable oil and recycled cooking oil. The fuel offers a higher cetane number than fossil-based diesel, providing more stable combustion and lower levels of sulphur and aromatic compounds. While current Toyota diesel models are compatible with a 20 per cent LCLF blend, this testing validates the use of 100 per cent renewable fuel.

Toyota Australia CEO Matthew Callachor stated that the results validate existing vehicle technology and provide an opportunity to reduce emissions from both new and existing vehicles while improving fuel security. Following the HiLux trials, Toyota plans to extend testing to other models, including the LandCruiser and LandCruiser Prado.
