Toyota bZ5 electric SUV launches in China at half the price of Tesla Model Y

Toyota's Chinese joint venture, FAW-Toyota, has launched the updated 2027 bZ5 electric SUV, positioned as a direct, lower-cost competitor to the Tesla Model Y. In the Chinese market, the bZ5's standard pricing starts at 129,800 yuan, significantly lower than the Tesla Model Y, which starts at 263,500 yuan. With limited-time cash discounts and trade-in subsidies, the entry price can drop to 109,800 yuan.

The updated model features significant technological upgrades, including Momenta 6.0 software, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, and a high-performance chip providing 544 TOPS of computing power. The vehicle is built on Toyota's e-TNGA platform and utilizes BYD Blade battery technology, offering two capacities: 65.28 kWh and 73.98 kWh. These batteries provide ranges of up to 550 km and 630 km respectively, based on the Chinese CLTC cycle.

Despite the aggressive pricing strategy aimed at challenging leaders like Tesla and BYD, the bZ5 has faced competitive pressure in China. Reports indicate that monthly sales peaked at 3,019 units in September 2025 before declining to 529 units as market competition intensified.
