Toyota develops new mid-engine MR2 successor for 2028
Toyota is reportedly developing a successor to the legendary MR2 mid-engine sports car, with a target market arrival in 2028. While Toyota has not officially confirmed the production date or the specific name, development programs are actively underway, including the testing of camouflaged prototypes.
The new model is expected to feature a mid-mounted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (code G20E). In standard road trim, this engine is projected to produce between 400 and 450 horsepower, though track-focused variants could potentially exceed 600 horsepower. The vehicle is also expected to utilize an all-wheel-drive system and may draw design inspiration from the Toyota FT-Se concept.
There is a possibility that the car will be marketed under the Gazoo Racing (GR) brand rather than carrying a traditional Toyota badge, as the company seeks to establish Gazoo Racing as an independent high-performance division similar to how Lexus operates in the luxury segment.
