Toyota to race hydrogen Hilux in 2027 Dakar Rally

Toyota GAZOO Racing has announced its intention to compete in the 2027 Dakar Rally using the DKR GR FC Hilux, a prototype powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system. The vehicle will participate in the ‘Dakar Future Mission 1000’ category, a specialized class designed to test the performance, safety, and reliability of next-generation mobility technologies in extreme environments. The project aims to demonstrate that hydrogen technology can operate effectively despite intense heat, vibration, and sand.

To support this endeavor, Toyota has secured several international partners, including Jameel Motorsport, DENSO, Toyo Tires, and IAV. Toyo Tires will specifically supply ‘OPEN COUNTRY M/T-R’ tires designed for off-road durability and sustainability. The hydrogen-powered Hilux is expected to emit only water vapor, supporting Toyota’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality through motorsport.

In addition to the racing program, Toyota confirmed that a production version of the hydrogen fuel cell Hilux (FCEV) is targeted for release in the European market by 2028. This commercial model is expected to offer a range of over 400 km and a towing capacity of approximately 2,500 kg, providing a faster refueling alternative to battery electric vehicles.
