Toyota Hilux Electric survives 760 kg trailer drop test

Toyota has demonstrated the durability of its ninth-generation Hilux Electric by performing an extreme stress test at Bentwaters Airport in Suffolk. In a recreation of a famous television durability test, a 760 kg camping trailer was dropped from a height of over 9 meters onto the vehicle's cabin. Following the impact, the electric pickup sustained relatively minor body damage and was able to start and drive away under its own power.

The new Hilux generation introduces significant technological shifts, including the brand's first fully electric model. This electric version features dual motors, all-wheel drive, and a 59.2 kWh battery, offering a combined range of approximately 257 kilometers. Despite the transition to electric power, the vehicle maintains its off-road capabilities, including a wading depth of 700 millimeters.

Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines, including a 2.8-liter turbodiesel with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, alongside the electric option. Additionally, the company has confirmed that a hydrogen-powered Hilux is expected to arrive in 2028.
