Toyota Land Cruiser 70 adjusts rear lights for safety compliance

Toyota has implemented varying rear light configurations for the Land Cruiser 70 Series to comply with strict safety and inspection regulations in markets such as Japan and Europe. These regulations require that rear lighting remains visible from specific side angles and while the rear door is open.

The design challenge stems from the vehicle's large rear-mounted spare tire, which obstructs the original high-mounted light clusters when viewed from certain angles. To resolve this without redesigning the vehicle's bodywork, Toyota has moved the functional lighting units to the rear bumper.

Market-specific variations exist: in Australia, secondary light clusters on the bumper operate alongside the upper lights. In contrast, models for the Japanese and certain Asian markets feature body-colored trim panels in the original light positions, creating a 'dummy' appearance. This design solution has historical precedents in previous Land Cruiser export variants.
