Toyota Land Cruiser marks 75 years of global off‑road legacy

Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation celebrate 75 years since the debut of their iconic off‑road models – the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol and Mitsubishi Pajero. The Land Cruiser originated as the Toyota Jeep BJ on 1 August 1951, followed a month later by the Nissan 4W60, the precursor to the Patrol, and a Mitsubishi Jeep that formed the basis of the Pajero. All three vehicles were initially developed to meet the logistical needs of the U.S. military during the Korean War and have since become renowned for their durability in extreme conditions, serving humanitarian organisations, miners, high‑altitude farmers and explorers worldwide.

Over the decades the Land Cruiser has sold roughly 14 million units, cementing its reputation as a near‑indestructible workhorse. The three marques continue to be marketed globally, with the 75‑year milestone highlighted in Germany and other markets as a testament to Japanese engineering and the lasting appeal of rugged, versatile SUVs.
