Toyota launches new Hilux pickup with battery‑electric variant in Indonesia

Toyota-Astra Motor (TAM) unveiled the ninth‑generation double‑cab Toyota Hilux in Jakarta. The new model carries a 2.8‑litre 1GD‑FTV diesel engine delivering 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque, alongside refreshed exterior and interior styling dubbed “Cyber SUMO”.

A fully electric Hilux BEV was also introduced, featuring two electric motors with a combined output of 144 kW, a 59.2 kWh lithium‑ion battery and all‑wheel drive for improved traction. President Director Takuya Yokohama said the EV option expands Toyota’s Multipathway Strategy and responds to growing demand for low‑emission commercial vehicles. He noted that Hilux’s market share in the 4×4 pickup segment rose from 57 % to over 70 % YoY.

Industry commentary highlights the launch as a sign that electric powertrains are moving beyond passenger cars to rugged work trucks, while preserving the Hilux’s reputation for durability and off‑road capability.
