Toyota launches next‑generation Corolla EV amid rising competition
Toyota is preparing a new generation of its Corolla sedan, marking the model’s 60th anniversary with a version that will include a fully electric variant. Chairman Akio Toyoda warned that the company “cannot survive” if it does not accelerate development, citing intense pressure from Tesla and Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and GWM. Engineers disclosed a sense of crisis inside the firm, with one admitting the company is “losing to China.”
The Corolla Concept, revealed at the Japan Mobility Show, features a low‑slung body, sporty front fascia and a nearly closed grille. CEO Koji Sato said the platform will support battery‑electric, plug‑in hybrid, hybrid and conventional powertrains, aiming to keep the Corolla attractive worldwide. Prototypes have been observed on Toyota’s secret development site, and the company emphasizes design appeal and connectivity for future electric models.
