Toyota leads development of next‑generation GR86 hybrid sports car

Toyota is expected to take sole control of the next‑generation GR86, moving away from the Subaru‑led joint development that produced the current model. Reports suggest the new GR86 could feature a Toyota‑designed 2.0‑liter turbocharged inline‑four and a hybrid system that may deliver around 300 ps of power, making it the most powerful GR86 to date.

Design revisions are likely to retain the FR sports‑car proportions while incorporating updated front‑end styling, a lower stance and optimised battery placement. The launch is anticipated for late 2027 to early 2028, although Toyota has not issued an official statement. The changes aim to balance increased power with the added weight of hybrid components, preserving the model’s lightweight handling character.
