Toyota opens $50M battery research center in Michigan

Toyota has opened the Toyota Battery Center of North America, a $50 million, 30,000-square-foot research and testing facility located in Saline, Michigan. The center serves as a central hub for the automaker’s North American manufacturing network, supporting battery development and evaluation for Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina and other regional operations.

The facility is designed to support a wide range of electrified technologies, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen, and battery-electric vehicles. Engineers and technicians at the center will work across the entire battery life cycle, from raw-material sourcing and technology evaluation to recycling and addressing field concerns.

In a partnership to support local innovation and workforce development, Toyota is opening the facility to the University of Michigan Electric Vehicle Center. This collaboration aims to provide researchers and students with access to cutting-edge testing infrastructure and prepare the next generation of automotive engineers in Michigan.
