Toyota patents automatic transmission that memorizes driver shift requests
Toyota has filed a patent for a new automatic transmission system designed to better respond to driver intentions, particularly during high-performance or sport driving. Developed as an evolution of the Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission used in models like the GR Corolla, the technology aims to bridge the engagement gap between automatic and manual transmissions.
Unlike traditional automatic systems that may reject a gear shift command if the engine RPM is too high or conditions are unsafe, this new system is designed to memorize the driver's request. Instead of ignoring the command, the electronic control unit would store the intention and execute the shift as soon as the vehicle's dynamic conditions and engine speeds reach a safe threshold. This approach is intended to reduce driver frustration during intense maneuvers, such as heavy braking before a corner, by ensuring the requested downshift occurs automatically at the optimal moment.
