Toyota plans revival of Celica sports coupé

Toyota is preparing to revive the Celica nameplate for an eighth generation, marking the return of the sports coupé more than two decades after its last iteration. The revival aligns with Chairman Akio Toyoda’s goal to resurrect the brand’s “three brothers”: the Supra, MR2, and Celica.

While official timelines have not been finalized, recent sightings of a two-door test mule for the 2027 World Rally Championship (WRC) have fueled speculation. The new model, potentially referred to internally as the Celica Sport, is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. It may utilize a 2.0-litre engine similar to the GR Yaris M concept.

The upcoming model is anticipated to serve as an entry point for the Gazoo Racing (GR) performance line, potentially utilizing underpinnings from the next-generation Corolla. This move would position the Celica as a competitor to vehicles like the Honda Prelude.
