Toyota recalls 10,000 C-HR EVs over potential power loss

Toyota is recalling approximately 10,000 units of its 2026 C-HR electric crossover models in North America due to a software defect that could cause the vehicle to lose power while driving.

The issue stems from the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit. When the traction battery is at a high state of charge, the regenerative braking system may attempt to overcharge the battery. To prevent overcharging, the system's safety guardrails may shut down the electric drive system, leading to a loss of power and increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota plans to notify affected owners in early November 2026. To resolve the issue, owners must visit a Toyota dealer to have the software in the battery electronic control unit updated. Unlike some modern EVs, these models cannot receive the necessary fix via an over-the-air update.
