Hyundai recalls 94,622 Genesis vehicles over fire risk

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 94,622 vehicles in the United States due to a fire risk involving power seat motors. The recall affects 54,644 Hyundai Genesis sedans (model years 2015–2016) and 39,978 Genesis G80 sedans (model years 2017–2020).

The defect involves the seat slider and height adjustment control switch on non-memory power seats. External force can cause the switch to become dislodged or misaligned, potentially leaving it in an engaged position. This causes the seat motor to run continuously, which can lead to overheating and fire while the vehicle is being driven or is parked.

Hyundai estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles possess the defect. The company has reported two incidents involving alleged fires, though no crashes or injuries have been linked to the issue.

As a safety precaution, Hyundai is advising owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until a repair is completed. A technical remedy is currently under development, and affected owners will be notified by mail. Repairs will be provided free of charge.
