Toyota sees price shifts in Japan via subsidies and model updates

Toyota is seeing significant price shifts in the Japanese market due to aggressive government subsidies. In Tokyo, the Toyota bZ4X electric vehicle can see its price reduced by more than half through combined national and local incentives. By stacking a 1.3 million yen national subsidy with a 1.3 million yen Tokyo metropolitan subsidy, the total aid reaches 2.6 million yen. This can bring the cost of a bZ4X down from a catalog price of approximately 4.8 million yen to roughly 2.2 million yen.

These measures aim to support Tokyo’s goal of reaching 100% non-gasoline new vehicle registrations by 2030. This comes at a time when electric vehicles accounted for only 1.6% of new sales in Japan in 2025.

Separately, Toyota’s GAZOO Racing division has introduced updates to the Toyota GR86. The 2026 model features technical refinements to the accelerator response, electric power steering, and manual gearbox to improve precision. Safety is also enhanced via an updated EyeSight driver-assistance system using three cameras. Interior updates include redesigned controls in the RZ trim to reduce reflections, and the return of the Solid Gray exterior color.
