Toyota tests electric Hilux durability with caravan drop stunt

Toyota has recreated a famous durability stunt originally performed by the television program Top Gear to demonstrate the structural integrity of its new all-electric Hilux BEV. Following a vote by the Reddit community, the automaker chose a caravan drop over a wrecking ball test to put the vehicle to the test.

At Bentwaters Airfield in Suffolk, United Kingdom, a 760kg caravan was hoisted approximately 9 meters (30 feet) into the air and released directly onto the cab of the electric pickup. While the impact significantly damaged the caravan, the Hilux sustained only modest bodywork damage, including scratches and a broken window.

Engineers confirmed that the vehicle remained fully operational following the impact. The electric Hilux was able to power up immediately and drive away from the site under its own power. Toyota stated the test was intended to prove that the transition to electric power does not diminish the legendary toughness and durability associated with the Hilux nameplate. The company noted that the battery underwent rigorous development testing, including deep-water immersion and extreme terrain trials, to ensure safety and resilience.
