Toyota tests WRC prototype in Spain, hinting at Celica revival

Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) has been spotted testing a new prototype vehicle in Tarragona, Spain, intended for the 2027 World Rally Championship (WRC) season. The vehicle, which features aggressive aerodynamics and a hammerhead-style front mask, is being tested to succeed the GR Yaris Rally1.

Speculation among enthusiasts suggests the prototype may signal the return of the legendary Celica nameplate. While the silhouette appears to be a wide and low two-door coupe, some observers note that the rear side window size and door proportions could indicate a four-door configuration.

The potential production version of this model is expected to feature a newly developed 2.0L inline four-cylinder turbo engine paired with the GR-FOUR 4WD system, aiming to maintain the high-performance legacy of the Celica GT-FOUR.
