Toyota to begin EREV production in China in April 2027
Toyota plans to begin production of its first extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) in China in April 2027. The company aims to produce approximately 200,000 units in 2027, with production targets increasing to 400,000 units annually by 2028.
Unlike standard hybrids, EREV technology uses electric motors to drive the wheels directly, while an internal combustion engine acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery. This setup provides a longer driving range and serves as a middle ground for consumers not yet ready to transition fully to pure battery electric vehicles.
Toyota appears to be developing these models specifically for the Chinese market to meet local demand and avoid intense price competition. Currently, there are no announced plans to introduce this specific EREV technology to Europe or the United States.
