Toyota to build next-gen Corolla in China starting 2028

Toyota Motor plans to begin production of its next-generation Corolla in China in 2028. The manufacturing will be handled by FAW Toyota Motor, a joint venture between Toyota and the China FAW Group.

The new model will utilize a “multi-pathway” vehicle architecture, designed to accommodate various powertrain options including gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric setups. This flexible platform aims to reduce development costs and allow Toyota to adapt more quickly to shifting market demands and diverse energy infrastructures across different regions.

The move comes as Toyota faces increased competition and declining sales in the Chinese market. By producing the model in China, the company seeks to leverage local supply chains to improve cost-efficiency and speed to market. While the next-generation Corolla concept was previewed at the Japan Mobility Show, the final production model is expected to be revealed in 2027.
