Toyota to launch Level 2++ autonomous driving technology in 2028

Toyota Motor has announced plans to commercialize its next-generation autonomous driving technology, referred to as ‘Level 2++’, by 2028. This system aims to nearly eliminate the need for driver intervention by combining end-to-end artificial intelligence with a rule-based safety mechanism. This hybrid approach is designed to act as a safety valve, using predefined traffic rules to prevent errors that might occur during AI decision-making.

The technology will initially be introduced in mass-market passenger vehicles. Toyota intends to expand its technological range by 2030, targeting Level 4 full autonomy for regional transportation and logistics sectors. This development comes amid intensifying competition in the Japanese automotive market, with Nissan Motor planning to launch end-to-end based vehicles in fiscal year 2027 and Honda in 2028.
