Toyota to start 2027 production of next‑gen hybrid batteries, 600k units

Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it will convert its existing battery production line in Japan to manufacture a next‑generation hybrid battery starting in 2027. The initial output is planned at 600,000 battery units per year, enough to equip the same number of hybrid vehicles, with the possibility of further capacity expansion.

The move is part of Toyota’s broader electrification strategy as hybrid‑model sales climb toward a target of 5 million units globally, representing roughly 45 % of its total sales. Toyota expects hybrid vehicle shares to rise in key markets – over 50 % in the United States, about 55 % in China, and around 70 % in Europe – by the end of 2027. The company also highlighted the recent 2024 takeover of its battery business, now operating as Toyota Battery Co., to improve performance and cost competitiveness of the new battery technology.
