Toyota to start Lexus NX hybrid production in Canada
Toyota is expanding its manufacturing footprint in Canada, with plans to begin production of the hybrid Lexus NX at its Cambridge, Ontario facility in December. This move comes as Toyota maintains its position as the largest automaker in Canada, having produced 537,518 vehicles across its Canadian plants last year.
The company has invested significantly in its Canadian operations, including $1.1 billion for the new Toyota RAV4 and several hundred million dollars for the Lexus NX. Approximately 85% of the vehicles produced at the Cambridge plant are intended for export, primarily to the United States.
Toyota’s decision to maintain and expand production contrasts with other major manufacturers like General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford, which have recently reduced or modified their Canadian operations. Additionally, Honda has suspended plans for a major electric vehicle battery supply chain project in Ontario. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada officials stated the company intends to maintain long-term production in the region, with plants currently operating at or near full capacity.
