Toyota unveils hydrogen-powered Hilux for 2027 Dakar Rally

Toyota GAZOO Racing has completed the production of the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) prototype designed for the 2027 Dakar Rally. The vehicle will compete in the new ‘Dakar Future Mission 1000’ category, which is dedicated to experimental technologies and alternative powertrains.

The prototype utilizes a dual-stack fuel cell system producing 400kW of power and features four high-pressure hydrogen tanks, similar to those used in the commercial MIRAI. The vehicle is built on the existing DKR GR Hilux platform, retaining its tubular frame, safety cell, and suspension systems while incorporating a new high-voltage cooling system to manage heat during extreme racing conditions.

Saudi Arabian rally driver Dania Akeel has been selected as the driver for both testing and the upcoming competition. This project is part of Toyota’s ‘multi-pathway approach’ to explore hydrogen technology in motorsports to gain insights for future commercial vehicles and reduce tailpipe CO2 emissions.
