Toyota unveils hydrogen fuel cell Hilux for 2027 Dakar Rally
GAZOO Racing has introduced the DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) designed to compete in the 2027 Dakar Rally. The vehicle will participate in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category, which is reserved for experimental vehicles and alternative propulsion systems.
Built on the same platform as the DKR GR Hilux, the new prototype retains the tubular chassis, safety cell, suspension, and brakes. However, it features a high-power unit combining two fuel cell stacks, utilizing high-pressure hydrogen tanks similar to those in the Toyota Mirai. The powertrain includes a dedicated electric axle, a new electronic system, and an IAV Dragoon ECU. To improve sustainability, some carbon fiber components have been replaced with natural fiber panels.
Saudi Arabian driver Dania Akeel has been selected to pilot and test the vehicle. Akeel brings extensive experience with the Hilux, having achieved stage wins in the 2025 Dakar Rally Challenger category and multiple victories in the W2RC seasons of 2025 and 2026. She will provide technical feedback to engineers to test the reliability and durability of the hydrogen system under extreme rally conditions.
