Toyota Vietnam and VETC partner to address Takata airbag recalls

Toyota Vietnam is collaborating with VETC (Vietnam Electronic Toll Collection) to expand warnings regarding the Takata airbag recall. Approximately 16,000 Toyota vehicles in Vietnam remain on the road with defective Takata airbag inflators that have not yet been replaced.

According to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), about 137,000 vehicles were originally subject to the recall, with over 86,000 having been inspected and repaired. The remaining vehicles often belong to older models that have changed hands multiple times, making it difficult to reach current owners with official warranty information.

The defect involves airbag inflators that may allow moisture to enter over time. In the event of a crash, the inflator can rupture, causing metal fragments to be propelled through the airbag at high speeds, posing a serious injury risk to passengers.
