Toyota Yaris: Next-generation hybrid and manual transmission details

Toyota is expected to undergo a full model change for the Yaris compact car between late 2027 and 2028. While no official announcement has been made, industry projections suggest the next generation may transition from the current 1.5L three-cylinder engine to a newly developed 1.5L four-cylinder engine. This shift is part of Toyota’s next-generation hybrid strategy, which aims for a fuel efficiency improvement of over 15% compared to current models.

The new engine design is expected to be approximately 10% smaller in volume and height, potentially allowing for a lower hood design and improved aerodynamics. This development aligns with Toyota’s multi-pathway platform approach, which integrates BEV, PHEV, and HEV technologies.

Currently, the Yaris remains a notable option for enthusiasts due to its availability of a 6-speed manual transmission. The 1.5L three-cylinder gasoline model with a 6MT is priced starting at 1,771,000 yen for the X grade, making it a rare, affordable manual option in the compact segment. The manual version features a lightweight 990kg body and includes standard safety features like Toyota Safety Sense.
