Toyota's 6‑Second Rope Twist Test Shows Rigorous Hiring Standards

Toyota Motor Corporation uses a distinctive hiring test called the "Rope Twist" to assess candidates' hand‑eye coordination and speed. The exercise requires participants to wrap a rope around six metal rods mounted on a wall in the correct order within six seconds. Failure to meet the time or order results in disqualification.

The test is part of Toyota’s broader "Dojo" training program, which also includes a "Flip and Place" task where workers must flip and arrange twenty small disks. While an average person takes about 20 seconds, a Toyota factory employee completes it in roughly 14 seconds. Toyota says these exercises improve ergonomics, enhance precision on the production line, and demonstrate the company’s commitment to skill development to visitors and customers.
