Toyota's Social Contribution Opens New Hospital Center in São Bernardo

Toyota agreed, as part of the negotiations surrounding the closure of its São Bernardo do Campo plant, to fund a permanent community contribution. The agreement led to the inauguration of a new Hemodynamics Center and the expansion of the Intensive Care Unit at Santa Casa de São Bernardo, attended by Wellington Damasceno, president of the Sindicato dos Metalúrgicos do ABC.

The new facilities will increase the hospital’s capacity and are expected to generate up to 300 permanent jobs, with 40 positions already filled. The union highlighted the initiative as a positive outcome of dialogue after the plant’s 2023 shutdown, which had deeply affected local families and the regional economy. The former Toyota factory, the company’s first outside Japan, closed in April 2020 after 60 years of operation, ending with 550 workers.

Damasceno emphasized that the contribution is separate from labor negotiations and serves as a lasting legacy for the community, showcasing how corporate‑social partnerships can turn a difficult situation into a benefit for the population.
